good posture and the ability to relax
Yoga fitness training sessions enable gay men to learn and practise yoga in a small informal group in an atmosphere that is friendly, non-competitive and safe. Provided you have no serious injury or illness then the sessions will be suitable and allow you to work and progress at your own level. The sessions are aimed at motivating rather than competing.
These session last one-and a half hours. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before start time. Basics are covered each week before building on them. Novices get the hang of the postures quickly and progress with regular attendance and practice.
What should I wear to class?
Wear clothing that does not restrict movement, such as shorts and vest or t-shirt.
Do I need to bring any equipment?
Equipment is provided at all sessions. Bring your own yoga mat if you prefer but they are provided at the classes
Can I eat before class?
Allow four hours after eating a large meal, or one or two hours after eating a snack before doing yoga. Tea is provided at the end of the session. Do not drink alcohol or take intoxicating substances before a class or you will not be allowed in.
Why yoga specifically for gay men?
Yoga fitness training sessions are taught by gay men for gay men in order to learn and practise yoga in a small informal group in an atmosphere that is friendly, non-competitive and safe. I find people work, learn and enjoy themselves more in a supportive environment with people they identify with. The yoga is serious but there is a light-hearted social aspect to the classes. It is not geared for pick-ups' but the guys do make friends. These classes have been running for 12 years. A number of students have attended regularly for several years and some continuously since 1995.
How do I know what level to attend?
The Sunday and Wednesday classes (nb Wednesday is at the Yoga Therapyi Centre, 90-92 Penton Street, N1) are open to anyone who has done little or no yoga. The Friday class is only open to those who have done a suitable number of Sunday or Wednesday classes or have worked with another teacher for at least a few months and are fit. More experienced students are welcome to attend the Sunday and Wednesday classes that will reinforce basic
good practice. The Friday class is more demanding and covers technique in more depth.
Fees and Bookings: A single class is £10. Two classes booked for a single weekend is £15. Places are limited so please book in advance by phone [number available to members only] 521 or EMail [email address available to members only]. The first class you attend is payable at the end of the session but payment is expected in advance for further classes. If you are unable to attend a class you have booked and paid for your fee will be carried forward to a future class provided you have given at least 24 hours notice. Fees, discounts, refunds bookings and places are at the discretion of the tutor David Tierney and are not negotiable.
