A strenuous but rewarding walk up onto the South Downs, beginning and ending in Hassocks. 13 miles in total, with a pub lunch at the Royal Oak in Poynings. There's a picnic option as well if you don't fancy the prices at the Oak. The walk will be led by the lovely Dan, formerly known on Out as ginandtonicdan, who works at the Royal Oak. There are stunning views from various points, and the weird steeply-climbing valley known as Devil's Dyke. There are three steepish climbs on this walk.
From Hassocks, we follow the railway until we reach a bridge on the right hand side. We follow this footpath through Coldharbour Farm and on to a small lane. Turn right and then left past The Warenne. Branch left across Wellcombe Bottom (hur hur hur) and take the third footpath on the right, down to Pyecombe. Follow the path up Newtimber hill and branch right at the gates. After this we follow a path that isn't marked on the map, but goes into the woods, staying close to the upper edge and then coming round and down to Saddlescombe Farm by the old chalk pit. The views from Newtimber Hill are amazing. From Saddlescombe, down to Poynings, via the garage. Those who may wish to bring a packed lunch can walk down beside the pub to the Causeway, where there is a nice spot to sit. Others can buy a snack or a meal in the Royal Oak. It's a bit pricier than the average pub have a look at the menu for mains. There are also snack meals, have a look.
After lunch, we walk up Dyke Lane from Poynings, admiring Tony and Barbara's shed on the way past, and then turn left, through the woods to the bottom of Devil's Dyke. We walk up the middle of the Dyke and carry more or less straight on at the end along the South Downs Way until we reach the top of Fulking Bostall, which we follow down to the Shepherd and Dog. From there, we follow a path to Brook House and from there to Lower Poynings, follow a path up through the school and straight over the roundabout and on to Red House Farm, passing under the A23. Up beside the chalk pit onto Wolstonbury Hill, where the views are astonishing, round the top of the hill and following another unmarked path back down to the Warenne and back to Hassocks by the way we started.
This walk is open to all, invited or not. We are a friendly bunch. I imagine there will be around 25-30 of us on the day, if the weather is nice, though we've had more than that before. If you want to be sure of invites to future walks, join the invite list at quickfind:224052 and mark yourself as DEFINITE.
To contact Gerry on the day, use [number available to members only] 53. I'm a bit mutton jeff so I don't always hear it ringing.
