Walk Out from Seaford to Eastbourne, London

21 July 2007: Walk Out from Seaford to Eastbourne

My favourite walk in south east England - up along the cliffs from Seaford to Eastbourne in East Sussex. It's a strenuous 13 mile walk with fabulous views of the Seven Sisters cliffs, passing Beachy Head in the afternoon. Bring a picnic lunch!

This is a wonderful walk that follows the coastline all the way from Seaford to Eastbourne. You'll need to bring a picnic lunch, so pick up a sandwich in Victoria station if you haven't time to prepare something at home.

We start walking from Seaford station at 11.16am, and head to the seafront. From there we walk eastwards, up and over Seaford Head. As we descend gradually on the other side, there are fine views of the Seven Sisters (which are chalk cliffs with seven summits). We come down to the shingle beach at Cuckmere Haven, where a river blocks the onward route. The tide may still be low enough for us to walk across the Cuckmere. This means either wearing sandals or walking barefoot across the pebbly-bottomed stream. If the tide has come in too far, we won't be able to cross it. So we do a short detour inland to Exceat, where we cross the road bridge before returning to Cuckmere Haven.

This is where the most strenuous bit begins. We climb up the cliffside again, but then we will descend and rise again seven times. It's not at all difficult if you are fit, but not recommended if you are out of condition. The landscape is glorious, with great views along the coast in both directions. Since this is chalk downland, we can expect to see and hear the skylark as it rises twittering into the sky, singing 'hymns at heaven's gate'.

On the clifftops we will stop around 1pm for our picnic lunch - make sure you bring sandwiches or something else to eat, as there is a bit of a walk until we reach somewhere you can buy food.

After the Seven Sisters, we descend again to a place called Birling Gap, where there is a pub and a café, and a beach you can climb down to for a swimming opportunity. This can be a busy spot since it is accessible by road and has car parking space.

From there, we go back up onto the cliffs and reach Beachy Head with its red and white lighthouse - still a popular spot with suicides. There is a massive pub here, and we can relax on the grass outside if it's sunny.

After that there is quite a long walk down into Eastbourne. It's possible to walk along the seafront for the last part. Then there's a choice of a drink, or fish and chips, or catching the first train back to London - about 1½ hours to Victoria, trains every ½ hour.
