15 March 2008: Walk from Plumpton Station to Ditchling & the South Downs
An 11 mile circular walk from Plumpton Station, East Sussex, with lunch at one of the pubs in Ditchling. In the afternoon we make the steep ascent onto the South Downs, then back down to follow the Old Post Road from Westmeston to Streat.
An 11 mile circular walk from Plumpton Station, East Sussex. This walk will be led by the lovely Dan - who was once an Outer known as ginandtonicdan. From Plumpton station we head mainly westwards, and eventually pass through Blackbrook Wood. We then follow the Sussex Border Path southwards to Ditchling.
In Ditchling we have a choice of pubs: The Bull Hotel and the White Horse Inn. However, they both belong to the same company. The plan is to try and divide the group fairly evenly between the two pubs. If we are up to our usual numbers, with about 40-45 walkers, they can only cope by restricting us to a selection of sandwiches, and chips. I'll try and get an idea of what people think, either on the train or when we get to Plumpton, so I can phone ahead to let the pub people know how many to expect.

After lunch we continue southwards to the foot of the South Downs, whereupon we make the steep climb up Burnhouse Bostall. We make our way eastwards along the beautiful South Downs, passing Ditchling Beacon. After about a mile we descend to Westmeston to follow the old Post Road from Westmeston to Streat, which Dan says is the nicest bit of the walk. We should arrive back at Plumpton station around 5.30pm.
These walks are very popular, and regularly attract around 40 people. Anyone is welcome to come along by inviting themselves, if you haven't received an invitation.
