4 August 2007: Walkabout Leeds Extra: Picnic & Stroll at Temple Newsam

Following the recent cancellation of this event due to a clash with the Leeds Marathon (last month) affecting our travel plans, I am pleased to announce the continuation of the Leeds Walkabout Extra series with a Picnic & Stroll at Temple Newsam.

THIS EVENT

More than just a walk in the park ...

After meeting at Starbucks in Leeds City Station we will head by public transport to Temple Newsam. Bring along your own sandwiches, bag of crisps, bottle of pop and something to sit on as we will find ourselves a nice spot to soak up the afternoon sun and take in the views. Once everyone is fed and watered we will explore the vast estate; hopefully taking in some of the highlights. Some of us may also wish to visit the House (Entry fee applies).

TIMETABLE:-

1115 Meet at Starbucks at Leeds Station

1130 (Prompt) Depart for bus journey to Temple Newsam

*1200 Picnic Lunch or Afternoon tea on the Estate

*1330 Stroll around Estate, possible tour of House

*1730 Head back into town (but before the last bus)

Possible beer, wine and pizza or similar at the end of the day

* Times are approx.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

Unless you already have a valid pass for bus travel a day rider costing £2.50 will need to be purchased to get us to and from the Temple Newsam Estate.

The estate consists of a house; with an entry fee of £3.50. Home Farm costs £3.00 to enter. A joint ticket can be purchased for £5.50.

The Courtyard Cafe provides food and drink, and seems to be fairly priced.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?

As previously mentioned, the estate consists of a fine Tudor-Jacobean House - we will have to content ourselves with a visit to this if the rain dampens our plans. Such is the risk of planning on open-air event.

PHOTOS

Both myself and others like to take photographs at our events, so if you do not want your image being captured please let us know before we start snapping away. Photos from our walk around Roundhay Park can be found in the relevent section of my profile.

BACKGROUND INFO

2007 is a landmark year for Leeds. 800 years ago Leeds was granted a Royal Manorial Banner Charter; thus allowing the gentry of the ancient City to take control of their own affairs. Events are being orgaised throught the year sponsored by various organisations as we "Celebrate Leeds 2007".

HISTORY OF WALKABOUT LEEDS

A few years ago I organised an event for OUT members who were not keen to attend Pride in Manchester. It was called WalkabOUT Leeds and featured a circular walk around central Leeds whilst pointing out items of historical interest along the way. We met at a central Leeds location and after the 2-3 hour walk many of us ended up in Pizza Express to counter all the healthy walking that we had just done!

I then repeated the entire walk a few months later for those people who had not been able to attend the first event.

Since then I have organised two more walks. Walkabout Leeds Two featured the canal, river aire and southern area of the city centre. In 2005 the last Walkabout Leeds Three featured the Eastern portion of the city and included a trip to the infamous Beckett Street Cemetery and the Thackray Medical Museum: all of which further enhanced our understanding of the history of Leeds.

Last year was so busy at work that I did not have the opportunity to complete the series - but watch this space. Later this year Walkabout Leeds 4 will be setting off as we explore the North and Western fringes of this great City.

WHAT IS WALKABOUT LEEDS EXTRA ALL ABOUT?

A lot of work goes into compiling notes that form the basis of the main Walkabout Leeds events; however, to get me back into practice I have set four dates for four easier to organise 'mini' walkabouts which will each feature a walk around four of our historic green areas. We started at Roundhay Park, and still plan to visit Kirkstall Abbey and Middleton Park before the end of the year.

Any questions please ask, and keep checking back here for any updates.

Look forward to welcoming you to Leeds !

photoPost-forty and enjoying life with family and a great circle of friends. I am looking to increase my social circle, especially when a couple of beers are required! I enjoy singing and currently sing Tenor with Leeds Philharmonic Society and Cantabile. Enjoy time with friends both in (watching a film, cooking a meal) or out (walking, photography).
