8 December 2007: Wadhurst Walk
A 7 mile walk through the unspoiled countryside of the High Weald, in East Sussex. This is a circular walk from Wadhurst Station, with a pub lunch at the Old Vine in Cousley Wood. One of a series of popular monthly walks organised by Gerry.

A simple seven-mile walk for December, starting and finishing in Wadhurst, East Sussex. There will be a pub lunch at the Old Vine, in Cousley Wood. The route follows the Sussex Border Path to the large reservoir of Bewl Water, and then follows its banks back to Wadhurst village for tea. This is beautiful country, full of hidden valleys and picturesque farms. Being the Weald, the route is almost never flat, but the gradients on this route are always gentle.
This is not the same walk we did in March this year, though it starts and finishes in the same place.
Wadhurst is a pleasant village set on a ridge and has many attractive weatherboarded or tiled houses. The village was once one of the most flourishing of the iron-smelting centres of the Weald.
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Wadhurst, dates from the 11th century. It is famous for 31 iron tomb slabs dating 1617 to 1799, a greater number than any other church in England, reflecting Wadhurst's connection with the Wealden iron industry. The church has a Norman tower with a pretty needle spire. In the west window of the south aisle there is glass designed by Burne-Jones and made by William Morris.
Everyone is welcome on this event - invite yourself along if you aren't on the guestlist. We usually have about 25 people on these popular monthly walks. We are a friendly bunch and very welcoming to anyone who hasn't been before.
