31 May 2008: Visit to Dunham Massey, National Trust property near Manchester
A walk of approximately 5 miles in the park and surrounding countryside, followed by lunch in the restaurant, then a tour round the gardens, finishing with afternoon tea.
The walk will be a gently-paced one, on the flat, and of approximately 5 miles. It starts off along the tree-lined avenues of Dunham Park, home to wild deer, birds, and aquatic life in the various ponds. It then continues through the picturesque village of Dunham, to join a stretch of the Bridgewater Canal. The route carries on along the canal and then back to Dunham Massey via the village of Little Bollington. I'm hoping to be back by around 13:00 to have lunch in the restaurant in the former stable block. Alternatively, you can bring your own food to eat in the picnic area. After lunch, there is a visit to the gardens, which contain formal and informal elements, with various water features, tree planting, shrubs, orangery, and moss garden. After that, there will be time for tea, a visit to the house, or more exploration of the grounds. Parking, entry to the house, and entry to the gardens are free for National Trust members, but carry a charge for non-members.
