The Pride, Sheffield, South Yorkshire
2 July 2011: The Pride
This play receives its northern premiere at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre after being nominated for the Olivier award during its London run in 2008. The intention is to follow this with drinks and a meal at a nearby venue - see quickfind:427221
Think Dr Who meets Queer as Folk: despite the off-putting title the play takes three characters and uses them to explore the nature of gay relationships in both 2008 and 1958 moving back and forth across a half century to show how the same characters might have lived and thought and loved in two different periods.
In the Fifties scenes we watch as Oliver and Philip are clearly deeply attracted to each other, but Philip lacks the courage to honestly acknowledge his homosexuality at a time when gay sex was still a crime. Back then men struggled for the right to love one another honestly. Now, the play argues, many gay men seem to be trapped in an endless obsessive cycle of casual sex and empty style. What has happened to the possibility of fulfilled and faithful love?
This is a joint event with quickfind:427221. You may attend either or both. If attending both please sign up to each event separately.

I'm an independent, intelligent, hard-shelled, soft-centred guy who adores going to the theatre - everything from serious drama to "silly" musicals. If you know the song I choose to title my profile, you know where I'm coming from.
