27 October 2007: Swing it on Broadway
A great evening of entertainment. Act one full of loads of broadway belters, comedy numbers and bit og Babs! Act 2 crammed with toe tapping swing, laid back jazz and some fab standards from new and old. All with a live band.
Musicals, Swing, Jazz, Showstoppers…. They are all coming to a theatre near you! Van der blast productions is a company specialising in wonderful entertainment for the discerning theatre goer. The company is packed full of West End Stars who have trodden the boards here, on Broadway and all around the world and they are here to bring you an evening packed full of great songs and music. With a live band and also playing instruments themselves, these talented songsters are the sparkle that makes the business we call show so special.
Swing it on Broadway recalls the days when you could catch a show on Broadway with stars such as Sammy Davis Jnr or Barbra Streisand and then hot foot it across town to a supper club and very often see the same stars crooning jazz standards into the small hours.
Act One is packed full of Broadway belters and hits from shows such as Les Misèrables, The King and I and Jesus Christ Superstar and also contains the showstopping medley that brought the house down in the West End – 26 songs in 4 minutes, you'll be on the edge of your seat!
Act 2 will transport you to a cabaret club where you can sit back and relax amongst hits from artists such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald alongside toe tapping numbers from the songbooks of Barry Manilow and Bette Midler.
Presenting this great evening is a group of singers who know how to shine lead by Alex Weatherhill and Ria Keen. Ria, who brings her Liza Minnelli like pizzazz to the show, also teaches voice for Birmingham Theatre School, has sung back-up for all manner of pop stars, appeared at the Palladium, had chart hits in Europe and lead the companies of shows like West Side Story and Sweet Charity – look out for a powerhouse rendition of And I Am Telling You from the musical Dreamgirls. Joining her is Alex, who has starred in the London productions of Chicago, The Pirates of Penzance and recently completed a critically acclaimed run as the leading lady(!) in an all male version of HMS Pinafore in London, which will transfer into the West End next year.
During the evening they will introduce two very special guests. Firstly, the beautiful (I'm not kidding) Chris Ellis Stanton who wowed the audiences and critics alike this summer as the romantic leads in Lady Be Good and The Boyfriend at Regents Park Open Air Theatre. With other lead roles in Anything Goes, Chicago, Grease and many others under his belt and the charm and good looks the girls love and guys love to hate he is tipped to be one of those John Barrowman type stars to watch.
Mark Pincher will join the cast during Act 2. He comes to you from such hits as Miss Saigon and Elvis the Musical and was seen last year in Birmingham as he showed off his marvellous vocal chords to a stunned audience at The Birmingham Rep Theatre.
This is a cast who know how to ‘Give ‘em the old Razzle Dazzle'!
The show is a sophisticated look at two great genres with unique arrangements and a live band to really bring everything to life. Brace yourselves for some full voiced harmonies, powerful songs and outrageous comedy. Above all; expect class, expect humour, expect entertainment.
