British audiences were prevented by the BBFC from seeing the full version of Bertolucci's controversial saga when it was released in 1973.
An expatriate American (Marlon Brando) enters into a tragic sexual liaison with a young woman (Maria Schneider) following his wife's suicide. With cinematography and art design by the two legendary Italian film makers, Vittorio Storaro and Ferdinando Scarfiotti, the film is a rich visual experience.
Last Tango also stars Catherine Breillat as Mouchette, who as a director, subsequently established an equally controversial role in French cinema.
