Real ale pub crawl, York, North Yorkshire
17 October 2009: Real ale pub crawl
A real ale pub crawl in York. London real ale drinking group visiting York for the day. Come with us if you're from the South, or join us if you're local to Yorkshire.
Following recent popular trips to Brighton, Cambridge and Oxford, the next trip for our London-based group of real ale drinkers is to York (2 hours by train, not as far as it sounds!). I'm advertising this early as National Express East Coast have just released lots of cheap (£13) advance single tickets, so book your tickets and join us. Yorkshire OUTers very welcome!
We'll meet at the Three Tuns pub in Coppergate from 12:30. Serves around 8 ales from the Jennings and Wychwood ranges. The pub is large and (apprently) has decent food, so a good pub for lunchtime. At 2pm we'll move on to the Blue Bell on Fossgate, which serves Adnams, Black Sheep, Tetley DM, Deuchars and Landlord, plus guests. Also has a tapas menu that's "worth a try", according to the Good Beer Guide!
Our next visit is to Pivo, a continental-style bar in a picturesque Tudor building, serving three Yorkshire ales and 11 continental ales on draft, and dozens more continental ales in bottles. Next up will be the Golden Lion, serving Greene King IPA, Landlord, Old Peculiar, and guests - also does good pub grub if anyone's hungry again.
On to the Yorkshire Terrier, with the York Brewery shop out front, and a bar behind serving the full range of their beers, including York Guzzler, Stonewall, Yorkshire Terrier and Centurion's Ghost. Next will be a quick one at the Guy Fawkes Inn, which serves half a dozen beers from various Yorkshire breweries. Finally to the Maltings, which again has a good half-dozen guest ales, and is well situated for the station for those of us returning to London.
