31 May 2008: Real ale pub crawl
A crawl of several pubs in Cambridge.
The crawl will start at Cambridge's premier real ale venue, the Live & Let Live, at 1pm. This pub has Everards Tiger and Nethergate Umbel (a coriander beer) as regulars, and 5-6 guest ales, normally including a mild. Drinkers are encouraged to taste before buying! We'll stay at the Live & Let Live till around 2:30pm.
Next up will be the Free Press, a Greene King pub (Greene King own the large majority of pubs in Cambridge, so we should pay homage!). In the old days, this pub was distinguished by being the only non-smoking pub in Cambridge. Now it is 'merely' distinguished by its cozy, charming atmosphere, excellently kept IPA, Mild and Abbots (and often a guest), and a tiny snug.
Our third pub will be the Maypole, which we'll get to around 4pm. In the (unlikely) event anyone fancies switching to a cocktail, the landlord here has apparently won prizes! They also have around 4 real ales on tap, including such beers as Adnams, Spitfire, Old Speckled Hen.
Having so far concentrated on the 'town' part of Cambridge, the remainder of our crawl will be 'gown'. Around 5pm we'll move on to our fourth pub, the Pickerel Inn, just across the river opposite Magdalene college. The Pickerel is a stunning, old oak-beamed pub, owned by the Woodforde brewery. It serves their Woodforde Wherry and Nelson's Revenge, Theakston Old Peculiar, and 2 guests.
Around 6pm we'll cross back over the river and walk past St John's, Trinity, Gonville & Caius, and Kings colleges to get to our next pub, the Eagle. One of Cambridge's largest pubs, the back bar is famously filled with RAF memorabilia. It's another Greene King pub, serving IPA and Abbots, as well as Old Speckled Hen and Ruddles.
Finally, we pass St Catz, Corpus Christi, and Queens colleges on route to the Mill, our final pub of the evening (7pm). The pub is small, but beers can be taken onto the adjacent Coe Fen, common land overlooking the Cam, and a very pleasant place to enjoy the last of (hopefully!) the sun.

Mature student living in Belsize Park, NW London. I enjoy good food and wine (both in & out), classical/jazz music, theatre and arts generally, and a good night out down the pub. I'm mainly on here for the Forums, and the odd Event. Oh, and I'm single... :-)
