24 May 2008: Railway Preservation at Barrow Hill
Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society operate a preservation site for railway locomotives. There are a group of OUT's (infamous) anorakerati spending a weekend in Derbyshire, and this is one of the places we plan to visit
Barrow Hill is an unusual railway preservation site, as it is not focused around a complete line. The aim is to preserve a 'Roundhouse' style engine shed.
As such there is no train journey to take here, rather the opportunity to look around at the locomotives under various states of storage, repair and preservation.
The site is host to some unusual stuff though - a large collection of AC electric locomotives, and it is also a base for the Deltic Preservation Society.
At the moment this seems to include the unique 89001, and a Deltic undergoing major overhaul.
They restore their locomotives to running order, and are main line connected. As such, the locos aren't always there - if they are off on hire somewhere...

Fair warning - the Barrow Hill website is loaded with a very out of date stock list, so don't rely on it if there is a particular loco you want to see. If you want to see a Deltic, you should probably keep an eye on the DPS website to see where their locos are.
I'm in touch with the project manager at Barrow Hill, and if we're a large enough group, I hope to organise a tour. Whilst this is likely to be at no charge, I hope it's appropriate to encourage us all to make a donation to their restoration fund on the day, if the tour happens.
