Queer London - History and poetry evening, London
8 February 2012: Queer London - History and poetry evening
Robert Mills co-author of A Gay History of Britain will speak on 'Discipline and Desire in the Medieval Cloister', followed by a poetry workshop led by Peter Daniels drawing inspiration from the gay past. Everyone, (wannabe) writer or not, welcome.
Although planned to coincide with LGBT History Month, this event is open to people of any sexual orientation. Please feel free to extend the invitation to all your friends.
The focus of the first half of the evening is on the life in medieval cloisters. This is based on Robert Mills' research. He teaches in the English Department at King's College London, where he also directs the Queer@King's research centre. A medievalist by trade, he works at the interface between art history and literature, with a particular focus on saints, suffering, sodomy and sex. He is the co-author with Matt Cook, Randolph Trumbach and H.G. Cocks of A Gay History of Britain (2007).
The second half of the evening is led by award-winning poet Peter Daniels. Peter is a winner of the Arvon prize for his London poem Shoreditch Orchid. He is currently translating the poems of Vladislav Khodasevich from Russian. He will be leading a poetry workshop drawing inspiration from the gay past. Beginners extremely welcome - just come for the talk or stay and get creative.
The evening is free -- but there will be a collection at the end to cover the evening opening of the building - a beautiful 17th Century Christopher Wren church. Please drop the organisers an email at [email address available to members only] if you are planning to come. Alternatively, if send me your name & email and confirm by 1700, 7th February that you are DEFINITELY coming along, I can add you to the registration list, or you can just come along on the evening. Registration just helps us to plan for things like teas and coffees, printouts, etc. Also if you add yourself as a Definite on OUT other Outers who'd like to meet will have a fair chance of connecting with you (all in time for the 14th..).

OUTeverywhere member organiser
This event has been added to the OUTeverywhere calendar by Wilson W from Greenwich in the London area.
Thoughtful, urbane man who enjoys good conversation and good wine/food. Completed my PhD at Exeter and moved to London where I am a policy researcher. Passionate about the theatre and the arts. Not much into sports unless it's the gym (which I use to stay trim rather than body-build). Always happy to make new like-minded friends.
