27 September 2007: Quaker Meeting for Worship in National Quaker Week
Heard about the Quakers? Ever wondered what happens at a Quaker Meeting? Now's your chance to find out during National Quaker Week!
The silent meeting for worship is very important to all Quakers. We seek a communal gathered stillness, where we can be open to inspiration from something beyond ourselves (some people call this God) and find peace of mind and a renewed sense of purpose for living.
A journalist from The Guardian attended our meeting last week and this is what she had to say: www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,2175616,00.html
What can you expect when you come to the meeting? Well, I will be at the door to say 'hello'. If you would like to say you're an OUTer and introduce yourself then I will have a chat with you. Alternatively, you can just go straight into the meeting without introducing yourself at all, which is what many first-timers do. There will be a circle of chairs and you can sit anywhere you like in the circle. There will be a table in the middle with 2 Quaker books and a copy of the bible which you are welcome to have a look at. The meeting will settle into silence at, or before 6.30 p.m.
During the meeting someone may feel moved to speak, something anyone can do, as all are considered equal. Quakers do not have priests, or a hierarchy, as we believe all people can have a direct relationship with God. The meeting will end at 7.30 p.m. when the elder of that meeting (me!) shakes hands with the person alongside and then everyone else will shake hands. I will be wearing a blue "Quakers for Peace" badge and I will be the person standing up at the end of the meeting to invite everyone to have tea and coffee, but you can sneak out with no hassle if you like!
Quaker Meetings are public and therefore open to everyone, so people other than OUTers will be there.
I will be there from 6.00 p.m. and also after the meeting to chat with you, if you would like. However you are also welcome to come and go quietly without talking to anyone if you would prefer.
If you would like to have a chat with me in advance, or just find out more about Quakerism informally, then feel free to send me a message and I will respond.
If you would like me to look out for you on the evening and say 'hello' then add yourself to the list or send me a message telling me that you are coming.
Hope to see you there.
