16 February 2008: Puccini's Manon Lescaut at the Picturehouse Exeter

Another HD transmission by the Met Opera to bring opera to all. Puccini needs little introduction having written Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, & La Boheme. Manon Lescaut was Puccini's 1st great success. It stars leading Met diva Karita Mattila.

Puccini operas are known for the verismo (realistic) storylines with dramatic music to match. They often end with death(s) of major character(s) and arias that are just breathtaking, e.g. Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, & La Boheme. Manon Lescaut, however, was the start of them all. It was Puccini's third opera and his first great success...one I know nothing about!

The story depicts the life and loves of Manon Lescaut, who flits between a young poet, called Des Grieux, and an elderly roué, Geronte di Ravoir. She has to choose between love and money, initially going for the latter. Although she chooses her love for the poet in the end, it is with some regret. Meanwhile, her lust for money and luxury leads to her downfall: when she pauses to collect her jewellery before running away with Des Grieux, Geronte walks in with the police and has her arrested and deported. She dies of exhaustion in the swamps of New Orleans.

Some consider Manon Lescaut Puccini's most underrated opera – relatively rarely revived and considered out-dated by writers on opera. Yet Manon Lescaut was Puccini's only critically unanimous success at its premiere, as all his other operas were either slated by critics or disliked by audiences. The composer revised ML more than any of his other works, revisiting the score for important international premieres or revivals. This opera was what set off Puccini's greatness for the next 30 years until his death in 1924.

This production stars acclaimed Finnish soprano Karita Mattila.

As a relative novice to the world of opera, I hope you'll choose to share this evening with me. The last Opera OUTing at the Picturehouse had a lovely group of 6. The more the merrier I say. Ciao!
