OUT Spirituality Group - Storytelling, London

13 October 2009: OUT Spirituality Group - Storytelling

Everybody has a story to tell, and everybody likes to be listened to. In this workshop we will explore what it is like to really tell our story, to feel really listened to, and also to really listen to another person while they tell their own story.

How often have you got a story to tell and it's burning inside you – yet the person you want to tell that story to seems more interested in giving advice, or interrupting, or comparing your story to other people's stories or just to incidents in their own life?

Everybody has a story to tell, and everybody likes to be really listened to. In this workshop we will explore what it is like to really tell our story, to feel really listened to, and also to really listen to another person while they tell their own story.

The art of storytelling, of knowing that you have been heard, and also of really hearing, can enrich all of our lives. The art of storytelling is one which transcends all cultures, and which is utilised by scriptwriters, film producers and playwrights. The yearning to experience a story draws us into visiting the theatre or the cinema, and watching the television or videos. But as good as these art forms can be (and they can be very good indeed), somehow we can forget that we all can be storytellers, and that we have a wealth of experience from which we can craft our own unique story.

In this short workshop we will explore:

• the art of putting together and creating our own story;

• the experience of having our story listened to with real attention;

• the art of really listening to and being attentive to another person's story.

This will include the opportunity (but only if we wish to) of telling our story to the larger group.

The Out Spirituality Group is a friendly meeting of like-minded gay and bisexual people who have an interest in spirituality. We look at a variety of topics and issues, with the aim of enabling people to broaden their knowledge and experience of spiritual matters (whatever that means for each of us).

There are opportunities to discuss our journey thus far, where we are at, and where our journey may be taking us.

Come along and be refreshed, invigorated and maybe discover different ways of thinking about things. The venue has an ambience of prayer and spirituality – at this location people have sought for centuries to encounter a power greater than themselves. There is something unquantifiably special about the complex of buildings that is St James's: it is a safe place for all who do not fit the usual stereotypes; here there is no pressure to conform. Hence we can soak up some of the accumulated spiritual energy of the years and possibly add in some small way to the spirituality that is here.

Whilst the prime focus is on spirituality, by participating in the evening we have an opportunity to build friendships and to network – and to form connections that will have a positive effect on our lives and potentially in ways that we cannot yet envisage. It is more than meetings!!

We have a pseudo-event dedicated to the friendship and networking side of things - see quickfind:318866

The meeting starts with a light buffet at 6.30pm, the charge for which is £3. This is a great way to unwind and to meet and greet new friends and old.

Our fortnightly meetings on Tuesday evenings are advertised on the ‘Events' section of OUT, and also on our website: http://tinyurl.com/osgevents

Nothing is ever set in stone, so please do let us know your views on the group in general, meetings that you have attended, and the sort of topics that you would like us to cover. The best way of doing that is to complete the feedback form on our website. Or send a message via OUT to the event organiser.
