OUT Spirituality Group: Thelki - a spiritual home for gay men, London
14 October 2008: OUT Spirituality Group: Thelki - a spiritual home for gay men
'Thelki' is the name of an ancient, mystical community home for the tribe of men-loving-men. It's a sanctuary where men can engage with their elders, learn about gay roles and consciousness, develop their inner awareness, and grow in confidence...
This session will be led by Tim Pickles. Tim writes:
'Thelki' is the name of an ancient, mystical community home for the tribe of men-loving-men, identified by Andrew Ramer in his writings. It's a sanctuary where men can engage with their elders, learn about gay roles and consciousness, develop their inner awareness, and grow in confidence to practice the specific roles undertaken by men-who-love-men.
In the twenty-first century, many of us are searching for meaning and significance in our lives; we experience a yearning for 'something more'; our spiritual search takes us from Coming Out to Coming In, and perhaps eventually to Coming Home. In this session, I'd like to explore these themes with you by sharing some of my discoveries, and by introducing some spiritual practices that may help to deepen your own consciousness of what you are seeking. Come prepared to participate and engage!
My spiritual path has involved reading, diverse practices, travel in the Far East, and formal training with The Interfaith Seminary. I am an ordained Interfaith Minister and Spiritual Counsellor. I am a member of the Edward Carpenter Community and of Eurofaeries and Asian Faeries. I'm trained in Thai massage and Body Electric work. My work is open to both men and women and I have a particular focus on supporting the growth of gay men.
I'm seeking to develop a real, practical 'Thelki ministry' here in the UK. A space where gay men can come for retreat, counselling, bodywork, sanctuary, healing and growth. A service already exists and you can read more at www.thelki.org.uk. There is a calling to develop this into something more substantial as an intentional community for men-who-love-men.

The Out Spirituality Group is a friendly meeting of like-minded gay people who have an interest in spirituality. We look at a variety of topics and issues, with the aim of enabling people to broaden their knowledge and experience of spiritual matters (whatever that means for each of us).
There are opportunities to discuss our journey thus far, where we are at, and where our journey may be taking us.
Come along and be refreshed, invigorated and maybe discover different ways of thinking about things. The venue has an ambience of prayer and spirituality; at this location people have sought for centuries to encounter a power greater than themselves. There is something unquantifiably special about the complex of buildings that is St James's: it is a safe place for all who do not fit the usual stereotypes; here there is no pressure to conform. Hence we can soak up some of the accumulated spiritual energy of the years and possibly add in some small way to the spirituality that is here.
Whilst the prime focus is on spirituality, by participating in the evening we have an opportunity to build friendships and to network – and to form connections that will have a positive effect on our lives and potentially in ways that we cannot yet envisage. It is more than meetings!!
We have a pseudo-event dedicated to the friendship and networking side of things - see quickfind:318866
After the meeting we go to a local gay pub, where space is reserved for us. This is a further chance to continue discussion and to get to know people. Food is available at a modest cost.
Our fortnightly meetings on Tuesday evenings are advertised on the ‘Events' section of OUT, and also on our website: http://www.gayspiritualityonline.org
Nothing is ever set in stone, so please do let us know your views on the group in general, meetings that you have attended, and the sort of topics that you would like us to cover. The best way of doing that is to complete the feedback form on our website. Or send a message via OUT to the event organiser.
