15 April 2008: OUT Spirituality Group - Coming Out to Freedom

Rabbi Mark Solomon will speak about the symbolism of the great Jewish feast of Passover, the festival of freedom (beginning this year on 19 April), and the way in which Jewish gay men and lesbians, following the mystics of the Kabbalah, can read the story of the Exodus from slavery in Egypt as a personal story of inner liberation from the limitations in our lives and the darkness of the closet. We will discuss coming out experiences and the ways in which discovering our own freedom can heal the broken relationships in our lives.
Rabbi Solomon is rabbi at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St John's Wood and lecturer in Talmud at Leo Baeck College. He came to London from his native Sydney twenty years ago, to complete rabbinic studies, then came out, left his job as an Orthodox rabbi and found a home in Liberal Judaism. He is the editor of 'Covenant of Love: Service of Commitment for Same-Sex Couples', published in 2005, the first such liturgy issued by any religious movement in the UK.

The Out Spirituality Group is a friendly meeting of like-minded gay people who have an interest in spirituality. We look at a variety of topics and issues, with the aim of enabling people to broaden their knowledge and experience of spiritual matters (whatever that means for each of us).
There are opportunities to discuss our journey thus far, where we are at, and where our journey may be taking us.
Whilst the prime focus is on spirituality, by participating in the evening we have an opportunity to build friendships and to network – and to form connections that will have a positive effect on our lives and potentially in ways that we cannot yet envisage. It is more than meetings!!

After the meeting we go to a local gay pub, where space is reserved for us. This is a further chance to continue discussion and to get to know people. Food is available at a modest cost.
