What is humanism, and how does it relate to us as gay spiritual people?
Jim Herrick will lead an interesting and informative session on humanism.
Here's a taster:
"Humanism is a non religious philosophy of life. It goes back to the ideas of the ancient Greeks and also is to be found to some extent in ancient Asian thought.
Humanists are usually atheists or agnostics. They believe that this life is all we have and we must make the most of it. We believe in human values that derive from our position as social animals. We recognise the scientific process as an important way of understanding our place in the universe. Scientific advance and the ideas of the Enlightenment are considered important. The importance of the imagination and the emotions must not be neglected.
Humanists doubt the existence of miracles and question the value of prayer.
There is no dogma, no one book to refer to and humanists may often disagree. There are no humanist institutions or rituals. Some humanists conduct non-religious funerals, for which there is an increasing demand.
Humanists ponder on whether there is a ‘spiritual' dimension to life – though the word ‘spiritual ‘ is not one they identify with.
We admire the example of great humanists such as Bertrand Russell, Jonathan Miller and Richard Dawkins.
Humanism is not the ‘triumph of the human' but a philosophy that can ‘give us hope that we may act constructively in the future and live richly in the present'."
Jim Herrick is former editor of the New Humanist magazine and the author of books on the history of freethought.

The Out Spirituality Group is a friendly meeting of like-minded gay people who have an interest in spirituality. We look at a variety of topics and issues, with the aim of enabling people to broaden their knowledge and experience of spiritual matters (whatever that means for each of us).
There are opportunities to discuss our journey thus far, where we are at, and where our journey may be taking us.
Whilst the prime focus is on spirituality, by participating in the evening we have an opportunity to build friendships and to network – and to form connections that will have a positive effect on our lives and potentially in ways that we cannot yet envisage. It is more than meetings!!
We have a pseudo-event dedicated to the friendship and networking side of things - see quickfind:318866
After the meeting we go to a local gay pub, where space is reserved for us. This is a further chance to continue discussion and to get to know people. On this occasion only, food is available at no charge - and lots of it!!
