27 August 2010: OUTBack to Basics Camping in Cornwall

OUTback is an annual gay camping event held over the August Bank Holiday weekend in a private field near Truro, Cornwall. Facilities include a toilet and shower block, bendy lighting, barbecue, and camp fire. Plus a boat trip to Porthcurno!

OUTBACK TO BASICS CAMPING IN CORNWALL

=====================

This will be the 10th OUTback camping weekend over the August Bank Holiday. It is held on a gay-only site prepared for just the one weekend each year.

See Quickfind:412958 to see who has purchased tickets so far. Anybody from OUT is welcome. Here are a few pics of OUTbacks past and here is the ongoing discussion thread: Quickfind:410294

photo:638876 photo:638877 photo:638873 photo:638872 photo:638870 photo:638867 photo:638866 photo:638864 photo:638862 photo:633172 photo:633170 photo:624245 photo:624243 photo:624241 photo:620162 photo:519129 photo:519126 photo:482057 photo:437481 photo:437466 photo:437465 photo:437460 photo:252941 photo:621445 photo:621446 photo:621441 photo:620164 photo:621432 photo:576815 photo:576808

Tickets for the camping weekend from midday Friday to 6pm Monday are £30 per person for the whole 3-day event. Extra nights bookending this period are £5 per head per night. Message me for ways of buying a ticket which may be by Paypal, bank transfer, cheque or postal order.

The event is non-profit; in practice it makes a loss due to the one-off nature of OUTback and the costs of turning an ordinary field into a reasonably civilised camp site for one weekend a year. In the past my party themes and marquee have added to the costs and subsequent losses, so this year, for the tenth anniversary we are going Back to Basics. That means a quiet, peaceful weekend for all except for the late-night chatting around the camp fire!

You are welcome to arrive as early as Wednesday and leave later than Monday, as some do every year.

This year we are going back to basics, so the photos above need to be photoshopped to delete the marquee, party, fancy dress and free food night etc.

But there will be a barbecue facility, purpose built toilet and shower block,

camp fire and bendy lighting. There will also be a large tent to act as a meeting place (the ex "OUTback Odeon"cinema tent). I'm sure you'll have just as much enjoyment from the weekend enjoying a more laid back purely camping event.

Most OUTbackers go off during the day and do their own thing. There are lots of things to do in Cornwall during the day, as anybody who has been here on holiday will know. Saturday is Cornwall Gay Pride day in Truro, see http://www.cornwallpride.co.uk/

Visit the famous Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, St Michael's Mount, Land's End, the historic tin mining area of St Just and Cape Cornwall, the creeks and inlets of the Helford River, or the beach party and surfing atmosphere of Newquay. Or how about a day trip by helicopter to the magical Isles of Scilly?

Andy Wanless and Phil will be organising a walk. The actual route will be decided on the day once those who are interested have reached a consensus on which of Andy's suggestions they prefer, but it might be here...Zennor. photo:252897 photo:620163 Let Andy @ Quickfind:yd0 know if you are interested.

Also -Grand Wildlife Spotting Competition! Every camper will be given an entry sheet on arrival, and the idea is that during the weekend you tick off as many items as you can find! For example: Swallow, Fulmar, Basking Shark, Sunfish, Buzzard, Fox, Badger, Snail, Worm, Shrimp, Whelk, Acorn, Red Admiral, Dandelion, etc. Prize for the person who spots the most items!

photo:576816 photo:725051 photo:725050 photo:725049 photo:633172 photo:633171

Also -Grand Wildlife Boat Trip! Join us on the MV Mermaid for a private hire 2-hour trip around the southern coast of West Penwith, from Penzance to Porthcurno, looking for basking sharks and to view the clifftop Minack Theatre from the sea. See Quickfind:410620 and photos above.

The campsite is in central Cornwall and easy to get to. From London or the North it is all motorway and dual carriageway. A new 10 mile section of dual carriageway has eliminated the tedious bank holiday jams at the old roundabout at Bodmin and the slow trek across Goss Moor. You can be at OUTback in 2 hours 45 minutes from Bristol Gordano services. This is the route once you turn off the A30 at Chiverton roundabout:

Once at the camp site, Truro town centre is just three miles away, while within a 5-minute walk are local shops and two pubs. You can arrive by train or coach, as Truro station is just 2 miles away).

OUTback is the highlight of the year for me and I look forward to welcoming campers old and new. Come along and you'll have a great time in the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, set amongst an idyllic field where we can enjoy ourselves in a relaxed all-gay environment. Do join us!
