OUTback 6 Guide to Cornwall, Truro, Cornwall

24 August 2007: OUTback 6 Guide to Cornwall

Here's a brief summary of Cornwall's attractions for those thinking of attending OUTback 6 Camping in Cornwall over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Enjoy!

There's lots going on!

OUTback 6 Guide to Mid and South Cornwall

Gosh –where do I start? There is so much to do and see in Cornwall that I can't even scratch the surface in this brief introduction. The OUTback campsite is centrally located just 5 minutes from the A30 main route up and down Cornwall, so all attractions are within easy reach. Of course most people come down to enjoy the fantastic beaches and coastal scenery, but there is plenty more of interest, including lots of inland visitor attractions for when the weather is not beach-friendly. I'll just keep this brief and highlight some of the most popular places. If you need more detailed information or ideas there are numerous websites that are designed to help visitors, or you can message me.

The best beaches are on the north coast. The sea is crystal clear and blue (except further up near Bude etc). Surfing is very popular. Beware of summer days when the sea appears to be calm but when a groundswell is running. This delights surfers but drowns holidaymakers who venture too close to the sea edge just as a 'big set' of waves approaches. Best beaches are Sennen, Porthmeor at St Ives, Gwithian, Perranporth, Holywell Bay, and all those around Newquay. The south coast is calmer in summer, and has lots of picturesque coves such as on the Lizard, Praa Sands, and Porthcurno.

The south-east coast around Falmouth, Truro are and Helford River is more for sailing and boat types, with lush valleys leading down to wooded inlets.

Cliff walking is very popular, especially between St Ives/Land's End and Penzance, where the coastal scenery is spectacular, but there are also very rewarding walks inland, where tourists rarely venture. You will find quiet ponds and lakes, old abandoned mine workings, woods, moorland, streams, and meadows all connected by ancient paths and bridleways. These are areas are ideal for mountain biking. One of the best is just south of the campsite, in and around the Carnon Valley which is part of the Coast-to- Coast Trail. Cycle hire www.elm-farm.co.uk (near Portreath) and www.cornwallcyclehire.com at Bissoe.

Here is a selection of attractions, with URLs. My personal rating out of 10, or NE (not experienced).

Into steam trains? Try the Bodmin and Wenford Railway www.bobminandwenfordrailway.co.uk. NE

www.goonhilly.bt.com if you like telecommunications and would like to visit the big dishes that are visible for miles around at Goonhilly Earth Station. 5/10 For a bit more of the same, but related to undersea cables and past communications methods, try Porthcurno Telegraph Museum www.porthcurno.org.uk 7/10

Are you into art? Try St Ives, the various artist galleries there, and the www.tate.org.uk/stives/ NE St Ives itself is a very picturesque ex-fishing harbour, but increasingly commercialised and best avoided
unless you like fighting your way through hordes of pasties and tourist tat. The beach at Porthmeor (7/10) is a horny sun trap full of wannabe surfers (the real ones are at Sennen or Gwithian in summer). Carbis Bay beach is very pretty and calm 6/10. Lelant Dunes are a known cruising ground bordering the Hayle estuary and beach. 7/10

If all the surfers and beaches get you wishing you were out there with them, take a surfing lesson with www.cornwallsurfacademy.com (at numerous beaches up and down the north coast).

For more cycling on the Camel Trail from Bodmin to Padstow go to www.padstowcyclehire.com

If you like gardens, Cornwall spoils you. Here is just a selection: www.tristhouse.co.uk
www.trebah-garden.co.uk 7/10
www.heligan.com The Lost Gardens of Heligan Unmissable 10/10
www.trevarno.co.uk

Oh, there are over 40 to try. Go to www.gardensofcornwall.com for lots of ideas. Not forgetting the Eden Project of course www.edenproject.com 8/10

Maybe you prefer horse riding? Try www.bosvathickridingstables.com at Constantine, Nr Falmouth., or www.newton-equestrian.co.uk down near Mullion Cove on the Lizard.

Truro house the Royal Cornwall Museum. It is only three miles from the campsite and can be included in a visit of Truro city centre, with its late Victorian cathedral and vibrant shopping atmosphere. www.royalcornwallmuseum.org.uk 6/10

Also a museum, but much smaller is the Wayside Museum at Zennor. Here you will find a fascinating collection of old Cornish artifacts, showing how life was led in the days before tourism and running water, which only arrived in the 1960s! Zennor is a small hamlet on the north coast between St Ives and St Just, with spectacular cliff scenery and views. There is a good pub with terrace where you can enjoy a meal in the setting sun. It's also where my Secret Beach is (see my profile pics). 10/10

Take a scenic flight from Land's End Airport www.landsendairport.co.uk
for £29 enjoy a short flight around lan's End, or for £71 you can fly all around West Penwith (the area west of Penzance/Hayle).
