3 February 2008: Out & About walk: The Vanishing Jewish East End
This walk explores the history of the Jewish community in the East End of London, encompassing rabbis, radicals and Yiddish Theatre.
The next Out & About walk will be in the East End.
This walk begins with one of the most beautiful houses in the East End, home to Jews from 1870 to 1913. Other places and buildings of historical interest en route include the Stepney Green Jewish School, the East London Synagogue (built as a great Cathedral Synagogue with a beautiful Byzantine interior, but now a flats), the Dunstan Dwellings (once virtually an anarchist commune), Rinkoffs (the last Jewish bakery in the East End), Sidney Street (the scene of London's most notorious siege), the Fieldgate Street Synagogue (one of the few active synagogues left in the area and now dwarfed by one of the largest mosques in Britain), the site of the so-called Hatton Garden of the East End (where 18 jewellery shops were until recently to be found), the site of 'Gardiners' (the 'Harrods of the East'), ending at the Whitechapel Art Gallery and Library.

If you're young and beautiful, old and interesting, or just fun, please stop by and say hello. I'm 46, and looking primarily for new friends - though I'm not partnered and not celibate. Initially a little shy, I'm a kind, good-humoured, self-mocking sort with mainly cultural interests. Please note that endless Internet chit-chat really isn't my "thing" - I'm looking to meet people in the real world.
