Out & About walking tour of Cambridge Botanic Gardens, Cambridge, London
8 May 2011: Out & About walking tour of Cambridge Botanic Gardens
Graham will be leading another of his entertaining and informative Out and About walks, but this time it will be outside London, in our 2nd university town of Cambridge. Let him know B4 25 April if you are coming (reasons & details below).
The original Botanic Garden of Cambridge University was founded in 1762 in the centre of the City, now known as the New Museums Site. This small garden was conceived as a typical Renaissance physic garden, inspired by the Chelsea Physic Garden in London. It grew herbaceous plants used in the teaching of medical students at the University. The existence of today's much larger Botanic Garden, occupying a 40 acre site between Hills Road and Trumpington Road, is due to John Stevens Henslow, the Professor of Botany at Cambridge from 1825 to 1861.
Henslow laid out the Garden to accommodate a wonderful tree collection. But he also planted his ideas about variation and the nature of species that would be taken up in a revolutionary fashion by his famous student, Charles Darwin.
The garden today continues to plant ideas, maybe even seeds of change, working to reflect and communicate new directions in plant science, as well as responding to the challenges of managing a historic landscape.
After the tour of the garden, there are optional tea and cakes in the Garden Café, followed by a walk along The Backs.
BTW I can't attend this walk myself as I shall be in NZ, so please contact Graham by e-mail if there are issues.
