3 August 2008: Out & About visit to Lullingstone Castle
Lullingstone Castle is one of England's oldest family estates, dating back to the time of Domesday.
The next Out & About visit will be to Lullingstone Castle, near Eynsford, Kent.
The present Manor House and Gate house were built in 1497 and have been home to the same family ever since. Both Henry VIII and Queen Anne are known to have been regular visitors. However over the years most of the land associated with the estate has been sold off, and parts of the historic house sub-let.
After returning from a nine month kidnap ordeal in Colombia in the year 2000, Tom Hart Dyke, son of the present owners, set about reviving the family fortunes by establishing an innovative World Garden, laid out in the shape of a map of the World. This pays tribute to the plant hunters of old and brings horticulture bang up to date with it's daring plan to grow exotic blooms, outside, in the Garden of England.
Bring a packed lunch for a picnic in the grounds, before a brief visit to the main Manor house, followed by a visit to the World Garden. The charge for the house and gardens is £6.
I shall be heading to Eynsford by train and visiting Lullingstone Roman villa beforehand, probably arriving at about 11:00am. If you are interested in joining me, please send me a private message.
