3 June 2007: Out & About visit to the Ranger's House, Greenwich
Guided walk around Greenwich with a visit to a magnificent art collection.
The Ranger's House is situated on the borders of Blackheath and Greenwich Park, with the Meridian Line passing through its grounds. An elegant early Georgian villa built in 1723, it became the official residence of the Ranger of Greenwich Park' after 1815, when the post was held by Princess Sophia Matilda, niece of George III. It remained an aristocratic and then royal home until 1902.
Today it houses the Wernher Collection an astounding display of medieval and Renaissance works of art, all purchased by the diamond magnate Sir Julius Wernher (1850-1912). Nearly 700 works of art are on display, including early religious paintings and Dutch Old Masters, minute carved Gothic ivories, fine Renaissance bronzes and silver treasures. Together these pieces reveal the genius of medieval craftsmen, and the unparalleled quality of Renaissance decorative arts. Admission to the house costs £5.50 - free to English Heritage members.
Please meet at 1.0 p.m. outside the entrance to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, close to the Cutty Sark. This is only a few minutes walk from the Cutty Sark Docklands Light Railway station. Alternatively access it via Maze Hill or Greenwich Rail station, both about ¾ mile away.
From here we can take a short walk to Greenwich Park for a picnic lunch, before strolling through some of the area's historically interesting streets to the Ranger's House, with an aim of reaching the house at about 2.30 p.m. After visiting the house we can descend the hill back to the Rose & Crown pub.

If you're young and beautiful, old and interesting, or just fun, please stop by and say hello. I'm 46, and looking primarily for new friends - though I'm not partnered and not celibate. Initially a little shy, I'm a kind, good-humoured, self-mocking sort with mainly cultural interests. Please note that endless Internet chit-chat really isn't my "thing" - I'm looking to meet people in the real world.
