Out & About Tower Bridge to Limehouse Walk, London
15 February 2009: Out & About Tower Bridge to Limehouse Walk
This month Out and About explores an interesting and historic stretch of the Thames.
The next Out & About walk will be to east London.
The River Thames has supported human activity from its source to its mouth for thousands of years, providing habitation, water power, food and drink. It has also acted as a major highway both for international trade through the Port of London. The river's strategic position has seen it at the centre of many events and fashions in British history, earning it a description by John Burns as 'Liquid History'.
The Port of London stretches along the tidal Thames, from Teddington Lock to the North Sea, with many individual wharfs, docks, terminals and facilities built incrementally over the centuries. As with many similar historic European ports the bulk of activities has steadily moved downstream towards the open sea, as ships have grown larger such that the docks and wharfs closest to central London, predominantly to the east, became increasingly redundant and run-down.
Regeneration over the past 20-30 years has however transformed the area with new housing and leisure facilities. This walk explores the section from Tower Bridge to the Limehouse Basin, taking in Wapping on route.
