11 April 2010: Out & About Dulwich Village walk
This month Out and About ventures south of the river.
The name 'Dulwich' is supposed to mean 'the meadow where dill grows'. The village is one of the oldest in London, the earliest reference being a Saxon charter of 967 AD. After the Norman Conquest, and until the dissolution of the monasteries, the manor belonged to the Priory of Bermondsey. Henry VIII granted it to the Carlton family. However, the most significant event in its history occurred in the early 17th century when Edward Alleyn bought the estate. Alleyn was one of the leading actors of the Elizabethan stage. He was also a successful businessman and was eventually appointed Master of the Royal Bears, Bulls and Mastiff Dogs, a lucrative post that made him an extremely wealthy man.
Using his wealth, he founded both almshouses and a school. The almshouses and school still survive, though the school, now called Dulwich College, moved to new premises in 1870.
Improvements in roads in the 18th century prompted the building of fine Georgian houses, occupied by City merchants and stockbrokers. Despite further development with the arrival of the railways in the mid 19th century, the village itself was preserved, as was a green belt surrounding it.
