Mental Health/Depression Focus Group & Research Project, Leeds, West Yorkshire
19 March 2012: Mental Health/Depression Focus Group & Research Project
A focus group to discuss mental health, depression & low self esteem in gay men. Please come and share your experiences & gain support for a research project. Volunteers wanted to do 1-2-1 interviews and also volunteers wanted to complete surveys.
May 21st 28th May 2012 is Mental Health Awareness week. To mark this awareness week a number of focus groups and an extensive gay men's mental health survey is being undertaken, with the view of developing/holding a day conference in Leeds on the 26th May during Mental Health Awareness Week, as well as developing a support/social group for gay men with mental health, depression or issues with low self esteem.
I want as many gay men as possible to contact me (in confidence) who are currently experiencing mental health/depression or slow self esteem or who have experienced difficulties in the past. As well as the focus group being organised, I want to do 1-2-1 interviews with individual gay men and also have a questionnaire for gay men to complete, again in confidence.
As a qualified counsellor, lifecoach, lifeskills trainer and a person who has experienced mental health issues and depression myself I am keen to explore the impacts that mental health has on an individuals wellbeing, health and in all aspects of life with regard to work, studies, relationships, sex and sexual health and our experience and relationship with ourselves and the world around us.
There appears to be very little research done on mental health issues and gay men, even though it is widely known that mental health difficulties are high amongst the LGB&T community.
Please support this initial research project. It is hoped that this could inform good practice, service delivery and also the exploration of developing a support/social group for those who experience mental health difficulties or depression.
Please come to the focus group to share your experiences with other gay men in a safe and supportive environment. If you can't attend the group but would like more information or to complete the confidential survey then please email me at [email address available to members only] or telephone/text [number available to members only] 47.
A duplicate date is also held on Saturday 24th March. If there is enough interest, then further focus groups will be held in other parts of the UK. Therefore, if you would be interested in attending a focus group near you, then please let me know.
All information received with be treated with respect, confidentiality, sensitivity and with high regard.

This event has been added to the OUTeverywhere calendar by Michael Dolphin from Huddersfield in the West Yorkshire area.
I am a caring and considerate person who is genuine, helpful and quite creative. I am a qualified counsellor and Lifeskills trainer. I am a good listener and am sensitive to the needs of others. Much more in my writings. About to move to Wakefield in early July 2011 and keen to make new friends in the Wakefield/Leeds or Sheffield areas, as I know very few people in the area.
