Usually the Surprise Film is something that I choose once the programme has gone to print, so at this time of year I would be writing speculatively, and crossing my fingers that some unfinished treat would become ready in time for our Surprise slot.
But in spring this year, a random conversation with an LA industry friend turned to the subject of the Surprise Film. Or rather, I was grumbling to her about the task of finding a sufficiently high quality and eagerly anticipated title year in, year out. She mentioned something she had in post-production, wondering if it might be a contender... Cut to a few months later, with the film finished, and rather wonderful.
So, this year I write from a different point of view, namely: I know what the Surprise Film is. And it is definitely finished (so that rules out a few things that some of you might have been hoping for).
Of course my lips are sealed, but I can tell you this: if it wasn't playing as our Surprise, it would surely be screening in a Gala slot. So, if you decide to brave the scrum for tickets, you will be handsomely rewarded. Unless of course you were hoping for a romantic comedy...
