2 June 2007: LGB 50+ Mental Health Survey
If you are over 50 and have used mental health services within the last five years, now there's a chance to give your views, describe your experiences (negative and positive) and ultimately change how mental health professionals treat LGBs.
Hi,
Apologies if this invitation does not apply to you. I am currently looking for LGB people over 50 who have used mental health services within the last five years to anonymously fill out an online questionnaire about their views and experiences (www.polarisurveys.org.uk). You will be entered into a prize draw if you want! (I haven't decided on the prize yet but I promise you it will be special).
I'm collecting this information on behalf of a voluntary organisation called Polari (www.polari.org) which works towards better services for 'older' LGBTs.
'Using mental health services' could have involved going to counselling run by a voluntary or community organisation (e.g. PACE). It could have involved attending a day centre run by a borough council. It might have included seeing a psychiatrist on the NHS or privately. Whatever your experience, good or bad, lengthy or brief, I want to hear about it!
The overall aim is to compile a report with which to approach mental health trusts in the Greater London area. If it emerges that LGB people over 50 have particular needs that have not been met, or have had experiences that are not acceptable, it will suggest the need for a proper audit of local mental health services. This audit will hopefully be conducted by individuals who take part in this survey and who want to be involved in further work (i.e. focus groups).
Please message me if you have any questions or suggestions. Obviously I will never mention anywhere on this site or outside details of who has gotten in touch unless you want me to.
