The invisibility of this sparkling Technicolor vehicle for Rita Hayworth (a follow-up to the inventive Cover Girl) is a puzzle. Possibly its propaganda message - British-American bonding in World War II - was already redundant with victory in sight.
Thanks to this gorgeous print, restored from pristine Technicolor originals by Grover Crisp and his team at Sony-Columbia, its many pleasures can be savoured anew. These include Hayworth in her auburn-haired prime, classy production numbers (music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Sammy Cahn), the late Janet Blair singing 'Anywhere', impeccable direction by British musical veteran Victor Saville, and (best of all) virtuoso dancing by the talented Marc Platt (whatever happened to him?), who stepdances to 'Figaro' (why not? - it works) and then, in a genuinely off-the-wall moment, improvises to one of Hitler's haranguing speeches.
The setting is London (Hollywood), complete with dodgy accents and Cockney char ladies; the title is a tribute to the Windmill Theatre during the Blitz and the dispensable plot is a hands-across-the-sea romance between American showgirl Hayworth and (ahem) RAF pilot Lee Bowman ("She's an American," says one soldier-boy to another. "Wonderful thing, lend-lease," the latter replies). Enjoy.
