Between 1968 and 1972, the USA's Apollo Space Programme sent nine spacecraft to the moon, and 12 men walked upon its surface. More than 30 years later, they remain the only humans ever to have stood on ground beyond our planet.
British documentary maker David Sington's highly enjoyable film interweaves first hand testimony from all the surviving Apollo crew members with breathtaking remastered NASA footage, much of it it never seen before. The astronauts themselves are a joy to watch, mostly humorous and articulate, and all self evidently fundamentally changed by their unique experiences.
Viewed with the passage of time, the Programme seems as unlikely as it was extraordinary, and when Gene Cernan describes it as 'sci-fi', what strikes now is how rudimentary the 'sci' seems to have been (there's a wonderful sequence in which we see the spacecraft being modelled in wood).
Whether or not you were there watching when the first pictures of Neil Armstrong's historic steps were transmitted around the non-communist world, this is inspiring and exciting viewing, and was a popular winner of the best documentary award at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
