There's something uncanny about Hou Hsiao-Hsien's ability to get inside the minds of women trapped in stressful but essentially everyday situations. He's done it several times in Taipei, he did it in Tokyo in Café Lumière, and now he does it in Paris in a memorable collaboration with Juliette Binoche. She plays Suzanne, effectively the single parent of seven-year-old Simon (his dad, a novelist, is in Quebec and doesn't seem to be coming back), who writes and narrates faux-Chinese puppet plays and hires Song, a film student from Beijing, as Simon's child-minder. Suzanne displaces her rage against her absent husband onto her downstairs tenant, and deliberately provokes a crisis by threatening to sue him for unpaid rent. Meanwhile the dreamy Simon is haunted by a stray red balloon, which may or may not have something to do with the fact that Song is trying to remake Albert Lamorisse's classic short The Red Balloon.
Unassertive but highly engaging, this is essentially a portrait of a woman fighting for her own emotional equilibrium. Steeped in Paris atmosphere, it's also very beautiful.
