The Renaissance Singers under their musical director JanJoost van Elburg present a programme based on the Lamentations of Jeremia, in settings from Alfonso Ferrabosco, Joao Esteves, Gesualdo di Venosa, Giovanni Palestrina and Robert White.
True, music for Holy Saturday is dominated by the Lamentations of Jeremia, bewailing the loss and destruction of the holy city and the dispersion of the chosen people. But who thought that a programme concentrating on just this music would be very homogenous in style will be extremely surprised. JanJoost van Elburg has put together a list of compositions from Tudor England (from the Elizabethan double-agent Robert White and Alfonso Ferrabosco, an Italian, who spent much of his career in England), Italy of Giovanni Palestrina (who is said to have preserved polyphony for the Catholic Church with his restrained style), and Gesualdo di Venosa (and the feverish, penitential music of a professed murderer) and isolated Portugal (where Joao Esteves was composing music mixing Renaissance polyphony with Baroque harmonies).
