Kirstyfest 2008, London
12 October 2008: Kirstyfest 2008
It's that time of year where admirers of our late, great singer/songwriter Kirsty MacColl gather to catch up, meet new friends and celebrate her life and music. You don't have to be a die-hard fan, all are welcome!
Kirstyfest is a gathering of those who admired Kirsty MacColl and her music, held around the time of her birthday (10th October) around her bench, dedicated to her by her fans in recognition of one of her most loved songs, 'Soho Square'.
Kirsty was a renowned English singer and songwriter who had collaborated with such people as U2, Tracey Ullman, Evan Dando, Billy Bragg, the Pogues and many more. Songs you will have heard include the perennial Christmas anthem 'Fairytale fo New York', her cover of 'Days' and 'A New England' as well as 'There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis' and 'Walking Down Madison'.
Kirsty was tragically killed in a scuba diving accident in Mexico in December 2000 and we have celebrated her life and music ever since.
Close friendships have been made through Kirstyfest and we are always happy to welcome new faces, even if you have never heard of Kirsty until now.
Many of us also support the Justice for Kirsty cause, run by her mother Jean MacColl. Many facts have been clouded by the defence (a rich and influential family of Mexico) and all that has been offered in compensation for Kirsty's manslaughter is the sum of £61. Remember, you don't have to be a die-hard fan to come along. All are welcome and we are a very sociable bunch!

At twenty-five the Devil felt compelled to take a rest, but the Widow cried, "Come raise your head, and put me to the test!" At sixty-nine, the Widow laughed. "Again! Again!" she cried, and the Devil said, "Well, I can see just how your husband died!"
