10 May 2008: Ivinghoe Beacon & Chiltern woodland - walk
An 11-mile walk in the Chilterns, along the Ridgeway to Ivinghoe Beacon, then visiting woodland in the hope of seeing some bluebells still flourishing. Bring a picnic lunch. This is a bonus Gerry-walk from quickfind:greenly
An 11 mile walk starting from Tring Station, in Hertfordshire. The first part of this route – following the Ridgeway along the Chiltern escarpment to Ivinghoe Beacon – is exhilarating, offering downland scenery as fine as anything on the South Downs. From the Beacon itself, it seems as if you can see half of England on a fine day. Then by way of contrast, you are then plunged into ancient Chiltern woodland, lovingly preserved by the National Trust. There is a good chance of seeing bluebells in bloom. The paths are generally pleasant and easy underfoot. All of the climbing is in the first half of the walk: the second half is all flat or downhill.
Note that we will be having a picnic lunch, so bring a sandwich or something along with you. We'll probably stop to eat beside Ivinghoe Beacon.
