27 January 2010: HMD - Pink Triangle Candle Lighting
Pride in Plymouth are marking Holocaust Memorial Day with a Pink Triangle Candle Lighting at 7pm. This proceeds An evening of Reflection which starts at 7.30pm in the Lower Guildhall.
The pink triangle was the symbol used by the Nazis to label gay prisoners in the concentration camps. Many gay men were sent to police prisons where they faced almost certain gruesome death. These men were buried in unmarked graves which contributes to the massive variations in the estimates of the number of Gay men killed.
It is important that the 100's of thousands of gay men that were slaughtered in the Holocaust are remembered. The few gay survivors have lived with horrific memories, many so traumatised that they never speak of the atrocities they experienced and witnessed.
