If you have Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000 or XP, Mac Power-PC with OS/X or a Linux computer, here is a free and easy way to further medical research. You don't have to leave the computer running any more than you already do. It won't slow you down.

You DON'T have to leave your computer running when you're not there because even the time taken between your keystrokes is VALUABLE PROCESSING TIME that can be used for scientifc research. Give it a try. After a few weeks, you'll be amazed at how much processing time can be recovered without your ever noticing it.
Of course, if you want to leave your computer running 24/7, then go right ahead -- I have several and they're all doing fine -- but there's no need to.
The "Fight AIDS at Home" project is a grid computing system that allows you to contribute to medical research into AIDS drug therapy.
The project is based at the Scripps Research Institute http://www.scripps.edu, is non-profit and is exclusively devoted to AIDS therapy research. Therefore, we are assured that there is no danger of your accidentally lending a hand to the KGB, the Pentagon, Al-Qa'eda, Ming the Merciless or even MacDonald's.

I do hope you will join this project; it will do good work and, by using the team name "OUTeverywhere", we will be able to see how much we are contributing as a community.
Simply put, "Fight AIDS at Home" runs a small program on your computer which lies dormant whenever you are making the computer work. However, whenever you stop, for instance, as you read this page, as you wait for a page to download, or when your screen-saver runs, this program 'wakes up' and proceeds to do calculations on a set of data downloaded automatically from time to time from Scripps' laboratories. Results are then uploaded back to Scripps as they are completed. The instant there is more work for your computer to do for you (if you move the mouse, touch a key, or if data arrives), the "Fight AIDS at Home" program goes dormant again. All of the calculations and data are done in a separate area of your computer, like a "sandbox", where the program can safely play without interfering with any of your work or data.
Greg and I have been running the program on our computers for the last year or two with no problems.
