GerryWalk to Bodiam Castle, London
19 March 2011: GerryWalk to Bodiam Castle
A circular walk from Robertsbridge for 11.6 miles, passing through rolling hills, woods, hop fields and orchards. We'll have a pub lunch at the White Horse Inn in Silverhill, and tea at the NT tearoom at Bodiam Castle.
A gentle walk of 11.6 miles through the rolling countryside of the High Weald in East Sussex. This is a circular walk from Robertsbridge, and like all the walks I organise it's a shortish train ride away from London. We'll walk through rolling hills, woods, hop fields and orchards.
We will be having a pub lunch at the White Horse Inn, Silverhill. They can only cope with 32 of us inside, so if the weather is fine and we are a large group, some will have to sit outside.
A highlight of this walk is arriving at Bodiam Castle, with its turrets and towers and wide spring-fed moat, in time for tea. We can have refreshments in the tea room without paying the entrance fee to the castle. Nearby we may hear the hooting of steam trains of the Rother Valley Railway. From here the route continues on a gently undulating course back into Robertsbridge.
This walk is taken from the 2nd Time Out Book of Country Walks near London: http://www.walkingclub.org.uk/book_2/walk_20/index.shtml.
Bodiam Castle: Built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrygge as a defence against attacks from France. England was at the time seriously under threat from a possible invasion and had suffered a number of raids, Rye and Winchelsea having both been sacked and burned in 1377. However, the only action the castle saw was during the Civil War (1642-51) when the interior was more or less gutted after which the castle was left to deteriorate. It was purchased in 1916 by Lord Curzon, who embarked on an extensive restoration, though today it remains essentially a shell. Now a National Trust property, the castle is open 10am 6pm, daily. We won't have time to go inside.
Last time I did this walk was in 2007 - pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/abridgeover/sets/721576[number available to members only] 5/.
We are a friendly group and welcome newcomers.
