We haven't done the Seven Sisters for a coupla years, so here it is again. This is one of the most-loved walks in south east England up along the cliffs from Seaford to Eastbourne in East Sussex. It's a strenuous 12 mile walk with fabulous views of the Seven Sisters cliffs, passing Beachy Head in the afternoon. Bring a picnic lunch!
This is a wonderful walk that follows the coastline all the way from Seaford to Eastbourne.
We start walking from Seaford station at 11.13am, and head to the seafront. From there we walk eastwards, up and over Seaford Head. As we descend gradually on the other side, there are fine views of the Seven Sisters (which are chalk cliffs with seven summits). We come down to the shingle beach at Cuckmere Haven, where a river blocks the onward route. Since the tide will be mostly out, we should be able to cross it. This involves fording the stream and the bottom is pebbly. It's a little bit hurty if you walk across barefoot, but doable. I plan to wear trekking sandals.

This is where the most strenuous bit begins. We climb up the cliffside again, but then we will descend and rise again seven times. It's not at all difficult if you are fit, but not recommended if you are out of condition. The landscape is glorious, with great views along the coast in both directions. Since this is chalk downland, we can expect to see and hear the skylark as it rises twittering into the sky, singing hymns at heaven's gate'.

On the clifftops we will stop around 1pm for our picnic lunch make sure you bring sandwiches or something else to eat, as there is a bit of a walk until we reach somewhere you can buy food.
After the Seven Sisters, we descend again to a place called Birling Gap, where there is a pub and a café. This can be a busy spot since it is accessible by road and has car parking space. There is also a beach you can climb down to. It is possible to bathe in the sea here, for any hardy souls.
From there, we go back up onto the cliffs and past Beachy Head with its red and white lighthouse still a popular spot with suicides. There's a massive pub here it's nicer to sit out on the grass with a drink or an ice cream.
After that there is quite a long walk down into Eastbourne. It's possible to walk along the seafront for the last part. Then there's a choice of a drink, or fish and chips, or catching the first train back to London about 1½ hours to Victoria, trains every ½ hour.
Don't forget to bring a picnic lunch! Buy a sandwich in Victoria station if you haven't time to prepare something at home.
Travel:
9.47 train from London Victoria, change at Lewes, to arrive in Seaford at 11.13am. Buy a day return ticket to EASTBOURNE as we shall be returning from there. Get to Victoria in plenty of time since there can be long queues at the ticket office.
Travel in the second carriage from the front of the train to meet up with other walkers.
Groups of 3 or 4 adults can travel for the price of 2. This means that if you get together with a small group at Victoria Station, your return fare will be £13.15 instead of £26.30 for a day return to Eastbourne. Ask for GroupSave at the ticket office.
Tickets cost £17.35 with a railcard.
We're unlikely to get back to London before 8pm.
We are a friendly group and welcome newcomers.
