A 10.8 mile circular walk from Saunderton, with a picnic lunch around 1pm. It's graded 6 out of 10 for strenuousness in the Time Out second book of walks.
This walk through a peaceful part of the rolling Chiltern Hills has one or two steep hills, but otherwise gradients are gentle and there are many fine views out over the valley and plain. The first part of the walk follows the valley bottom before following the Ridgeway to Bledlow. In the afternoon you pass through a series of secluded valleys before reaching Radnage and then over Bledlow Ridge and back along the valley to Saunderton.
The Parish Church of Holy Trinity, Bledlow, dates from the 12th century. The nave is believed to be part of the original church. Of special interest are the nave arcades, which are fine examples of early 13th century work and also the 14th century windows. There are some interesting remains of medieval mural paintings in the north aisle, particularly that of St. Christopher.
St Mary's Church, Radnage was built largely during the 13th century. The church tower is original and of a style which has elements of the late Norman and early English periods. It is decorated with wall paintings, which span six centuries. The porch was added in the 15th century and has a fine perpendicular arch above the door.
Default meeting place is always the second carriage from the front of the train.
Catching a 10.18 train from London Marylebone Station, buy a Day Return ticket to Saunderton. The train's destination is Birmingham Snow Hill. We arrive at Saunderton Station at 10.54, so if you are coming by car please do not be later than this time as we can't keep the group waiting.
Full fare is £17.00. No-one should have to pay this - there are enough of us with Network Cards that you can at least get one-third off and pay only £11.20. As always, the cheapest option is to go in a group of 4 and ask for GroupSave, you get 4 tickets for the price of 2, paying a total of £8.50 each.
This is the most recent of a series of monthly walks. They are very popular with gays both on this site and other places where I list the event.
