A lovely 8½ mile circular walk from Haslemere, taking a picnic lunch. The route is through very beautiful countryside. It is mainly National Trust land - mixed woods with blackberries and bluebells and heathlands of bracken, gorse, heather and bilberry, with fine views from Black Down (280 metres/919 feet), the highest point in both Sussex and the South Downs National Park.
It is particularly lovely when the rhododendrons are in flower in late spring, although the heathland is at its most colourful in late summer.
In Tudor and Stuart times Haslemere was a centre for the iron industry. With the coming of the railway in the mid-nineteenth century it became a popular spot for literary people. The poet Tennyson's house, Aldworth, is on the slopes of Black Down where he loved to walk; and George Eliot wrote Middlemarch in Shottermill.
One or two of the paths can be very wet and muddy , even in dry weather: use appropriate footwear.
Start at Waterloo Station for the 10am train to Haslemere. It stops at Woking and Guildford en route. We set off walking from Haslemere Station at 10.50 so if driving, don't be late. Free parking is not available in station car park, but in nearby residential streets.
Travel in the second carriage from the front of the train to meet up with other walkers en route.
Tickets at full price are £18.20, but no-one should have to pay this. It's £12 with a railcard, and only £9.10 each if you get together with 3 others on the day and buy a GroupSave ticket. (4 for the price of 2).
We should get back to London before 6pm.
These walks are usually popular, and open to anyone. If you haven't been before, please feel free to join us, we're a friendly bunch. If you want to get invites to future walks, go to quickfind:224052 and mark yourself Probable or Definite.
Don't forget to bring a picnic lunch!
