17 May 2008: gay walking week, chartreuse massif, france
I am organising an event in France 17-24 May 2008 which will be mainly about walking. The Chartreuse Massif is to the north of Lyons and west of the Alps. It is largely unspoiled and offers excellent walking countr.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE NOT MANY PLACES LEFT FOR THIS EVENT - WE HAVE QUITE A FEW PARTICIPANTS SIGNED UP FROM ECC AND ELSWHERE.
The main theme of the week will be walking. The area is unspoilt and beautiful, especially in the Spring where there are many flowers and some snow on the peaks. The area featured in the film ‘Into the Great Silence' http://www.diegrossestille.de/english/ about the monastery at Chartreuse. We will do at least one walk near the monastery.
The Walks
Walks, which have yet to be planned, will be up to 10 miles. This is a mountainous area so walks will involve some ascents and descents, though probably not exceeding 800m of ascent. Walks will be through meadows as well as on the peaks. We will try to provide shortened versions for those wanting something less challenging.
Accommodation
The accommodation, run by two Dutch guys, is described at www.ecoleduvillard.com . We will be taking over the whole house where there is room for 12, with room for another four in a nearby house with large garden - this might suit couples. Please note there are some double beds in the main house and it may be necessary to share. Accommodation costs are likely to be between £250 and £300 including meals and local transport. Please ignore the prices on the Ecole du Villard website.
Flights
Flights to Grenoble are possible with the low-cost airlines (Easyjet and Ryanair - possibly others). It will be important to book as soon as flights are released – get the timing right and these may be entirely free of charge but are unlikely to cost more than £60 if you book well ahead. But do not book flights until you have a confirmed place for accommodation. Once we have received your deposit and have confirmed that you have a place on the week, the organisers will give you the details of the recommended flight for you to book your own flight. This will happen once the airlines release details and (hopefully cheap) fares. It will help if we can all arrive on this flight or at least at the same airport at around the same time.
