12 August 2007: Gay Outdoor Club Hertfordshire: monthly walk (Stevenage)
Ladies and Gents are welcome to join the GOC Herts' monthly walk. This month's walk is ~8 miles from the Fairland's Valley Park to "Forster Country", Stevenage.
Would you like to join the men and women of Herts GOC on a circular walk around the green bits of Stevenage?
Oh, did you not know that Stevenage sits around managed parkland? And that it's greenbelt holds beautiful countryside?
Stevenage has a reputation today that bears no resemblence to its past. Built around a parkland, Stevenage was the crowning glory of brutalist architecture, becoming the most modern and forward-looking town of its time.
Fair enough, the town council wants to demolish the town centre (!!!). But the town is bigger than its shopping centre. The parkland remains intact and the town has enforced its green belt policy to ensure the surrounding countryside remains pleasant. This walk will explore the park and the countryside, with bits of urban life.
The walk's leader has lived in Stevenage for a number of years and has taken a keen interest in the area's civic history.
Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water. Recommend plastic sheeting to sit on (for lunch)(but don't eat it). Wear sturdy walking boots that can cope with tarmac and mud.
Herts GOC is a local branch of the Gay Outdoor Club ( http://www.goc.org.uk/ ). It promotes the practice, learning and refining of outdoors activities and skills.
GOC has its own annual subscription fee. Prospective members are welcome to "try before you buy".
