gay literature reading group & workshops, Newport City, Monmouthshire
30 September 2011: gay literature reading group & workshops
This gay literature workshop is the first of this kind and has taken a little bit of time to plan and organize. Some interest has already been expressed and it would be great if more people supported this event. The event will be open to all members
Depending on interest, places will be allocated on a first come basis. If this new event is a success, we could easily plan subsequent events on such areas as literacy skills, reading the classics, science fiction, poetry, plays etc.
At the first gathering, we can decided which gay literature books we would like to read over the weekend. The list is as follows so if you have any requests or preferences please let me know either on this thread or via a pm. People do not have to read, listeners and a few helpers would be very welcome too. Non gay friends are welcomed too.
The "Top 10 Gay & Lesbian Reads"*** are as follows:
(taken from the "The Book Club Bible - The Definitive Guide", Michael O'Mara Books Ltd (2007) ISBN No 9781843172697]
"Giovanni's Room" ~ James Baldwin
"Don Juan in the Village" ~ Jane Delynn
"Our Lady of the Flowers" ~ Jean Genet
"The Well of Loneliness" ~ Radclyffe Hall
"The Line of Beauty" ~ Alan Hollinghurst
"Tales of the City" ~ Armistead Maupin
"Brokeback Mountain, Close Range: Wyoming Stories" ~ Annie Proulx
"The Story of the Night" by Colm Toibin
"A Boy's Own Story" by Edmund White
"Oranges are Not the Only Fruit"
I would also like to suggest the following if there is an interest:
"Maurice" ~ E M Forster
"De Profundis ' Oscar Wilde
"Fucking Martin" ~ Dale Peck
"The Hunger" ~ David Rees
"Death in Venice" ~ Thomas Mann
"The Lost Language of Cranes" ~ David Leavitt
Outers may like to bring along their own favourites. The most popular choices will then form the basis of the weekend. We could perhaps structure the sessions say on the friday evening for those who would like to come for the whole weekend or for those locals who just wish to pop in as and when. For a small cost, I may well be able to provide the reading materials that we need. The donation will go towards my local charity and for teas and light refreshments.
I am pleased to say this event is open to all members and non members. As the event is not until October there is plenty of time to think about it and any suggestions would be most welcome.
Any tips you may have from past experience of reading groups would be welcomed too. This event will be a learning curve for me so anything that is unclear please SHOUT OUT. I look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks
AJ (aka Bridee) Precise details will be given closer to the time either by pm on OUT or by email if preferred.
