Garden Squares of Upper Chelsea & Belgravia. Out & About, Westminster, London
13 March 2011: Garden Squares of Upper Chelsea & Belgravia. Out & About
Graham will be leading another of his inimitable Out and About walks with historical & architectural commentary, this time through the posh bits of town: the garden squares of Upper Chelsea and Belgravia.
The Garden Squares of Upper Chelsea and Belgravia Sunday 13 March 2010
After the Great Fire of London in the previous century, wealthy Londoners had not wanted to return to the crowded, dangerous conditions of the old medieval City. Instead they flocked to the new estates being built in the countryside to the west of London. These self-contained communities, based around squares, offered a different, healthier way of life. Thousands of wealthy people migrated to live in the new West End, while continuing to do business in the City, becoming in effect London's first commuters. This walk explores the Georgian and early Victorian garden squares of upper Chelsea and Belgravia. Along the way you will meet some of the notable characters who have lived there over the years. The walk starts and finishes in Belgrave Square (which is but a stone's throw from 'The Star Tavern' in Belgrave Mews West.)
