24 May 2007: FREE screening of "Ghosts"
Free screening of Nick Bloomfield's acclaimed dramatisation of the murder of Chinese cockle pickers.
Film screening: Ghosts
Date: 24 May 2007
Presented by Amnesty International UK and Anti-Slavery International
Screened in 2006 as part of the London International Film Festival, this is Nick Broomfield's second fiction feature, inspired by the deaths of 21 Chinese cockle pickers in Morecambe Bay in 2004. The film traces one Chinese migrant as she tries to escape poverty in China by traveling to the UK where she works in various exploitative jobs. Although the film is a work of fiction, Broomfield carried out detailed research in both the UK and China. The strong cast of non-actors bring home powerfully, the reality faced by thousands of migrants in the UK.
The screening will be followed by a Q and A with Nick Broomfield, film maker and director (other films include Aileen, Life and Death of a Serial Killer, Kurt and Courtney ,The Leader, The Driver and The Driver's Wife) and Klara Skrivankova, Anti-Slavery International, author of the report Trafficking for forced labour in the UK, 2006. The discussion will be chaired by Tim Hancock, Campaigns Director, Amnesty International UK
