Film: The Journeys We Make, Bridport, Dorset
9 February 2011: Film: The Journeys We Make
A short week of cinema and lively debate in a lovely coastal setting. Staying in a retreat centre with a friendly vibe and a bunch of people to eat popcorn with and discuss each film you watch. If that's you bag..then come along..
Othona's Film Week has been running for more than a decade, and was started by a friend of mine, Toby, who sadly died some years ago. Several OUTers came to his funeral and remember the amazing celebration afterwards on the Kubrick estate - Toby was a close friend of the Kubrick family.
Our usual pattern is to explore a different theme each year with two films a day, and a chance to discuss and share after each movie. There's no pressure to watch all the films - so if you want to hang out or explore the area for some of the time - that's fine. I try to draw on a wide variety of cinema. There'll be some foreign language films with subtitles. One old black and white classic, (we all lived in black and white once when everyone looked so much more stylish!) Perhaps something quirky and unusual. And a fairly mainstream film too. I try to find films which might throw up different perspectives from the experience of both men and women. And the discussion goes in the direction the group wants it to -- with a little gentle steering from me to help propel ideas forward.
This year's theme is 'Journeys'. Both literal and metaphorical ones. The journeys we make...and the journeys that make us. It won't all be road movies, allthough that is one of my favourite cinema genres. And you won't be expected to be all highbrow and discuss genre and narrative arc and cinéma vérité and all that stuff in hushed tones. As I say, the discussion will go wherever the group wants ...
Numbers: There are 12 booked already and there are still spaces available. It's not exclusively gay - but I know there will be at least one gay person there (other than myself). But it's not an LGBT weekend as such.
Cost: £195 or £152 concessionary rate.
This includes accommodation and all meals and the course fee. I should add that my personal fee (as course leader) has been agreed with the centre and **reached by numbers already booked** - so I am not benefiting personally by posting this event on OUT. Although, obviously the centre itself will benefit from any extra bookings.
