Discover the Alexander Technique in Oxford - introductory evening, Oxford, Oxfordshire
10 October 2008: Discover the Alexander Technique in Oxford - introductory evening
The Alexander Technique is a great skill for life, a subtle and thoughtful discipline but simple enough to understand once you've seen it happening. Come and see, experience something new with AT teachers & chat over coffee & cake with my colleagues.
'Life changing: freedom of movement, freedom from pain, improved alertness, able to learn again, improved confidence, better health, improved breathing, inner calmness, to mention but a few changes.'
(Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique pupil survey 2006.)
The Alexander Technique teaches the skilful "use of the self": how we move, how we stay still, how we breathe, how we learn, how we organise our awareness and focus of attention and, above all, how we choose our reactions in increasingly demanding situations.
It is a subtle and thoughtful discipline, but essentially practical and problem-solving. The Alexander Technique works through re-establishing the natural relationship between the head, the neck and the back - the "core" of the body that supports the strength of the limbs and which provides the structural environment for breathing and for the internal organs.
Your organiser, quickfind:think.up , is training to become a teacher of the Technique and has helped organise this introductory evening, along with others from the Oxford Alexander Training School. There will be eight qualified and experienced teachers present: in the second part of the evening, they will give those attending the chance to experience the technique close-up and to ask their questions. In the first part, Reynold will give a lightning tour of medical evidence and trials that show how effective the technique is, and Stephen will demonstrate the skills we learn with the help of people drawn from the audience.
We are baking busily, so there will be tea, coffee and cakes included in the entry price of £5 and leaflets and a bookstall. Everyone will have some time with a real Alexander teacher, too.
The Quaker Meeting House is at no.43 St Giles - go through the red door, through the front building and straight out across the back garden to the main meeting room. It's a lovely space.

This event has been added to the OUTeverywhere calendar by Patrick Says Free Your Neck from Witney in the Oxfordshire area.
Student again, professional singer and Madame Arcati all in one, juggling fascinating outer and inner lives. Would love to meet friends to join me on country walks, Saturday brunches at home and unconventional outings. Humour, tease-ability and depth a must, fear of change a distinct disadvantage. Affirming messages and shameless flattery always welcome.
